Unlike other Habanos brands, José L. Piedra uses tobacco exclusively from the Vuelta Arriba region near Remedios, a lesser-known but significant tobacco-growing area. The brand flourished in the early 20th century, particularly in the American market, but faced decline after the US embargo in 1962.
